" To gaze into another persons face is to do two things: recognize their humanity and assert your own." (29)
The book of Negroes is a historical fiction piece based on the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. The title is given from the actual British document called The Book Of Negroes, which contains many names of African slaves. The novel follows the young girl Aminata Diallo through the tragedy of losing her family, leaving her home in Bayo, and becoming apart of the slave trade. Aminata is brave and wise throughout the novel and displays the true strength of a human. She is smart and realizes that some of her attributes can be of value to her captures, which ultimately means she is of value. The book displays her journey through Africa, across the ocean, through the plantations in America, Nova Scotia, back to Africa, and finally England. It showcases the life of a slave in the slave trade from birth to death. Overall a beautiful and insightful novel.
