Dramatic term #3 : Comedy/Humour
Comedy and Humour is simply the act or quality of being amusing. Although Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy, there is still many humorous moments. In this play Shakespeare expresses comedy through characters like Mercutio and the Nurse, irony, and actions. An example of one of these moments would be when the Nurse and Mercutio meet in act two , scene four. He mocks her relentlessly for the humour of his friends and her. Another example would be in act one, scene one where Lady Capulet mocks her husband by saying, "A crutch , a crutch! Why call you for a sword?" (I.i.70) after her husband asks for a sword.
Shakespeare's use of comedy and humour enhances the entire play because it gives a variety of emotions and slight reliefs. He adds hints of humour to liven up his tradgedy. A perfect example would be the mockery of Lady Capulet in act one, scene one. Which actually happens right after a tense fight between the houses. Therefore shakespeare uses humour and comedy to liven up the play and the audience.
