Term: Symbol
Definition:
Person, place, thing, or event that represents something beyond itself, most often something concrete or tangible that represents an abstract idea.
Example:
The Hunger Games contains many important symbols. Some of which include fire, mockingjay, cannon, bread, and many more. Although my favourite symbol in the Hunger Games would have to be Katniss. The literal meaning for Katniss is an edible root that grows near water, and the protagonist of the novel was named after it. This root is symbolic to survival since it provides food and evidence of water close by. Katniss as a character is also a very good symbol for survival. She needed to learn how to survive after her father's death and takes those skills with her into the Games. An important quote from the novel spoken by Katniss's father is , "As long as you can find yourself, you'll never starve.". Katniss is survival.
Full Quote:
" I knelt down in the water, my fingers digging into the soft mud, and I pulled up handfuls of the roots. Small, bluish tubers that don't look like much but boiled or baked are as good as any potato. 'Katniss,' I said aloud. It's the plant that I was named for. And I heard my father's voice joking, 'As long as you can find yourself, you'll never starve.' . "
