This novel follows Esther Armstrong, a young moody girl who is coping with the death of her older brother Max. It follows her denial and pain through the summer of her fifteenth year. Although she distracts herself by diving into the backstory of a series of war letters she finds in a crack in her wall. She becomes consumed by the mystery and obsessed with finding out what happened to the people in the letters. Unfortunately she does not have peace and quiet to think things through since her house is being used as the set in a World War One movie. With family problems, heartbreak, mystery, and a lot of distractions Esther finds out how to put her life back together again.
